conscientização - critical consciousness zip hoodie

Mama J’s words sparked something deep within Maurice’s mind, stirring the ideas he had read about in books he’d found hidden in the back of the library—the works of a man called Freire and another author Richard Taylor. He remembered how Freire, in Pedagogy of the Oppressed, wrote about the cycle of oppression and the importance of conscientização, or critical consciousness. Maurice’s young mind had puzzled over the word before, but sitting across from Mama J, he felt a glimmer of understanding take root. Freire believed that liberation could only be achieved when the oppressed understood the systems that bound them and learned to view themselves not as passive objects but as subjects of their own lives, capable of change and creation.
